A Taste of Nostalgia:
The Grannies Pound Cake Story
There’s something about the first bite of a pound cake that feels like home. It’s the kind of familiar dessert that takes you back, reminding you of your mom’s recipe, your aunt’s kitchen, or a moment shared around the table with family. For Grannies Pound Cake, that feeling is more than inspiration; it’s the foundation.
Owned by Detroit native Patrice Davis, Grannies Pound Cake is more than a brand; it’s a heartfelt tribute to traditions, family, and the simple joy of sharing something delicious.
Rooted in Purpose
While Grannies Pound Cake is rooted in nostalgia, its story begins with intention.
After retiring, Davis knew she wanted to stay active and create something meaningful. As she reflected on desserts that truly stood out, she kept coming back to one thing: the taste of a really good pound cake. Specifically, the kind that felt homemade, rich, buttery, and familiar without tasting artificial. “I decided on pound cake because it was hard to find one with a homemade taste in stores,” she said.
“The recipe was something I created through years of tweaking. When I first started baking pound cakes, they most definitely didn’t taste like they do now. It took a while to perfect it.”
That idea became the foundation and reminder of why she continues to do this every day. Davis focused on customers’ personal stories and created a cake that, from the very first bite, brings you back to something personal. That intention to make something memorable, accessible, and genuinely comforting is what has led to her success today.
Simple and Classic
With that purpose in mind, Grannies Pound Cake keeps things simple, and that’s exactly what makes it stand out.
Each cake is handcrafted with a focus on flavor and texture, delivering signature buttery richness and moist consistency that the brand is known for. The goal isn’t to overcomplicate — it’s to get it right.
Davis’ core lineup includes Butter Classic, Butter Lemon, and Butter Pecan. Available in snack-sized portions, they’re perfect for satisfying that immediate craving. At her Detroit location, she also offers full-size cakes and slices, designed to fit into everyday moments just as easily as special occasions.
While the classics remain at the heart of the brand, Grannies Pound Cake isn’t afraid to be a little creative. With customer suggestions always at the ready, Davis has explored specialty flavors like chocolate glaze, caramel, pineapple upside-down, and peach cobbler. She notes how the base cake always stays the same, “that’s what people love, and we never mess with something good”.
This balance of consistency and creativity has led to customer favorites like the lemon glaze and caramel, while also inspiring new ideas like developing a shelf-stable Butter Vanilla Glaze. It’s this approach that keeps customers coming back for more.
“A pound cake should taste a certain way. It can’t be dry. It has to be moist and it has to deliver that buttery, vanilla-y pound cake taste.”
Built in Detroit
Born and raised in Detroit, Davis built her business with the same values that define the city: resilience, pride, and community.
Before becoming an entrepreneur, she spent time teaching special education in Detroit Public Schools, where she began testing recipes every Sunday. “When you see Grannies Pound Cake, then you know that's me,” she would tell her students.
Davis believed not only in accomplishing her own goals, but also in uplifting those around her. That commitment has come full circle, with one of her former students now working alongside her. She continues to create opportunities for individuals in Detroit who may not always meet traditional hiring requirements.
Her dedication to the community has not gone unnoticed. In 2025, Davis received the Spirit of Detroit Award — a recognition of both her business and her impact.
Through events and markets like MS Taste of Generosity, Hour Detroit’s Food and Wine Show, and Eastern Market, she’s built meaningful connections with customers — hearing their stories and watching as they light up from the first bite of pound cake. Those moments reinforce her pride in not only her brand, but also her community.
“I am a Detroiter, so the business had to be in Detroit.”
Encouraged Growth
As the brand continues to evolve, Davis remains focused on one thing — staying true to her original vision. She recalls moments where customers take their first bite, finish the slice, and then purchase a whole cake to take home. “The community keeps me encouraged,” she says. Through these shared experiences, she continues to create a space for customers to relive memories through her pound cake.
“I’m honored to be able to deliver a pound cake that satisfies their requirements of what a pound cake should be.”
The next time you’re shopping at Woodward Corner Market, take a moment to look for the snack-size pound cake in its signature yellow packaging. Because with Grannies Pound Cake, you’re buying more than a dessert. You’re experiencing something familiar, meaningful, and something that might just bring you back with the very first bite.
